Awake and Powerful Are Not a Trade
You can have one, the story goes, but not both. Be the monk, calm and free and out of the game. Or be the mogul, sharp and driven and at war with yourself.
I picked neither, and got both. So I don’t believe the trade is real.
For most of my life I wouldn’t have argued the point, because I had neither. Then the Fundamental Shift® happened, and the man I’d been since childhood stopped running my life. What came forward was steady. Present. Done fighting.
Peace like that doesn’t make you soft.
The career came after the shift, fast. I walked into my company as a temp with no degree and no credentials, and I became its youngest Vice President of Technology. It tells you something the culture gets backwards: the peace didn’t cost me the drive. It changed what the drive ran on.
Think about what’s actually running the ambitious version of most people. Underneath the output there’s an engine, and the fuel is usually fear. Fear of being ordinary. Fear of the score never being enough. You can build a real career on that fuel. People do it every day. But you pay for it with your own body, and the day you stop producing is the day the dread comes for you. That’s a job you can never quit.
When the inside settled, the fuel changed. The drive didn’t leave. It stopped eating me to run. I could build hard and want a lot and still come home present, because there was no longer a verdict riding on the result. That’s the part the trade can’t account for: the peace is what made the power sustainable. Take the fear out of the engine and you don’t slow down. You stop burning yourself for speed.
Now, the monk side of the lie gets called wisdom, so let me name where the line really is. This peace is not detachment. I’m not telling you to want less so it hurts less when you lose. That’s the same trade, swapping ambition for numbness and selling it as depth. Both traditions cover half. The Eastern teachings describe the awakening well. I only found that out after it happened to me. What they don’t cover is the human half: rent, career, wanting things out loud. The Western side teaches the human half all day and treats awakening like it isn’t real. I needed both. The shift made me free inside a life that kept getting bigger.
I spent more than twenty years taking the shift apart so it would stop being luck. That work is Identity Shifting®, the part you can actually practice: getting underneath the self that’s running you and rebuilding it on purpose, instead of waiting for life to break you open. If you want the longer version of how a temp with no credentials ended up here, my story tells it.
The monk and the mogul were never the only two options. There’s a third, and it’s the one I took.
