Dissociation Technique

In the audio, I go much deeper than the basic technique.  But let me take a moment to explain the basic premise.

There are essentially three things necessary to make enduring change:

  • You must become sick enough of having the problem that you REALLY want to change.
  • You have to see the problem from new perspective, or in a new light
  • You have to create a new and appealing option, and it must be pursued.

The simplest way to do that is to “change perspective”.

Think of the “I can’t see the forest for the trees” metaphor…

Instead of “being the feeling,” being so close to it that it consumes you (in the trees), you “back up” and see yourself having the experience (see the forest).  

You literally dissociate.

You see it from a different point of view, that of an observer.  This is incredibly powerful and can be used all the time.

We are not shoving emotions into the shadow with this.  And we are not becoming emotionless (at all).  We are actually processing them and adding options.

The error is thinking we ARE anger, or that we ARE sadness.  

When stuck in those feelings, it sometimes seems we have become the feeling (and often that it may never change – at least it can feel that way).

This is known as “nominalizing” and that is one of the largest problems we as humans face…  (More on this later.)

Instead…  What’s closer to the truth is that we are always “in process,” and having experiences.  The dissociation technique is a way to see the forest for the trees, and free yourself of overwhelming emotions.

Note:  It takes courage to do this exercise, because you will, for a brief moment, need to feel the feelings deeply…  But it will help immeasurably if you take the time to do it.  

Before you start, think of a persistent, negative feeling or experience you’ve had, and be ready to change it forever.
